Myles Upchurch powers St. Albans to DCSAA Championship victory
On Sunday at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, St. Albans senior pitcher Myles Upchurch led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over Jackson-Reed in the D.C. State Athletic Association championship game. Upchurch, an Alabama signee, threw a complete-game shutout and hit a decisive two-run homer in what was likely his final high school at-bat. The win secured St. Albans its second DCSAA title in three years and third overall.
St. Albans finished third in the IAC during the regular season and reached the semifinals of the IAC tournament. The Bulldogs did not allow a single run in their three DCSAA tournament games, with strong pitching performances from Preston Benner and Jacob Romhilt in earlier rounds. Despite an injury to his non-throwing wrist, Upchurch opted to hit after a solid batting practice session, delivering the game-winning swing. He struck out eight and threw 109 pitches, just one shy of the DCSAA limit. Jackson-Reed's Nelson Hayes also pitched effectively, but Upchurch's heroics stole the spotlight. Coach RJ Johnsen praised Upchurch's performance, calling it "the Myles Upchurch show."
