Landon shuts out St. Albans 3-0 in IAC soccer final
On Thursday at St. Albans, Landon defeated rival St. Albans 3-0 to secure their fourth Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) tournament title in five years. St. Albans continued their recent dominance of the regular season, winning their fifth consecutive regular season crown. However, in the tournament final, the Bears utilized a gritty defensive effort and opportunistic scoring to claim the championship.
Landon's season was initially derailed by a string of injuries that led to a disappointing 2-4-1 start. However, as key players returned, the team regained its competitive form. In the final, senior Nick Appleton opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a header, followed by a counterattack goal from senior Zak Niang. Although playing without a full-strength roster and cycling through seven different defenders to withstand Bulldog pressure, Landon sealed the victory with a late stoppage-time goal by Appleton. Coach Bill Reed credited the team's depth and multisport athletes for their resilient postseason run.
